What to do with my 1.7 F2N?

Messagepar tanago » 04 mai 2021, 20:56

Car is '85 R11 Txe, 200k kms

  • the other day I measured the compression - 16 psi, manuals say compression should be 10:1 which is 14.7 psi - mine is too high so oil is in the cylinders
  • Valve clearance is too tight too ~ 0.35mm for all exhaust and 2 intake have 0.15mm so valves will need to be readjusted.

The Head will need some work, thats 100%.
My questions for the experts are:

  1. what usually goes bad for F2N? Valve seals or piston rings?
  2. should I also rebuild the Block - how piston rings and crankshaft+piston bearings hold up?
  3. while doing the valves clearance is it good idea to make the valve seats too?

Hello tanago,

It's surprising you regret too high a compression in the cylinders, because with 200 000 km, the problem is often low compression. Do the four cylinders have the same compression ? It's important to have a good balance.

Why would you like to rebuild your engine if it seems to have good parameters ? The frequent and obvious problem with F2N is the carburetor. You haven't any problem on this side ?

well, one of the problems is that the oil canister fills my air filter box with oil and I think it's because of the high compression. The compression is almost equal for each cylinder

Equal compression for each cylinder is a good point. Air filter spoilt with oil is usual for such a generation of cars. It happens when you drive for a while with high rpm. It is the reason why it is useful to replace regularly the air filter. Be happy with high compression, it means that your engine is young :-)

Update:

Head is completely refurbished and like brand new!
Cylinders have wear 0.07-0.11mm
Pistons have wear 0.01-0.03mm

The worst piston-to-wall clearance (cylinder and piston #4) is 0.17mm, factory is 0.05mm

The piston rings grooves looks worn too.

I think about just finishing the cylinders with crosshatch pattern, fitting new piston rings and assembling, any other suggestions?
